Sathiyan G - The National Champion

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran ended his long wait for a national title with a 4-2 win over nine-time champion Sharath Kamal in the 82nd National Table Tennis Championships.

Playing his fourth final in seven years, Sathiyan ended the jinx by beating nine-time winner Sharath Kamal 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 The two Chennai-based players, ranked in the world’s top-50 bracket, produced some exciting times.

Despite medals in Asiad & CWG, the National crown has always eluded Sathiyan, who made numerous changes be it in his racquet, the rubber on it, & skill set in the last 1 yr bagged his maiden National Championship title on Tuesday, Feb 23, 2021, .

On his part, Sathiyan was understandably more relieved than excited. “The monkey is off my back. Winning the National title means a lot to me, having come so close in the past. My coach S. Raman (a four-time National champion) always maintained that winning the National title was no big deal if we came prepared for the challenges. All these years, we prepared for the Pro Tour and came to the Nationals and failed to make the right adjustments. This year, I must say, our preparations paid off.”

Even on Tuesday, Sharath was gracious in acknowledging the new champion. “Sathiyan deserved to win this every bit. He played far better while I was lucky to win the third game. Though I did have my chances but could not take them. No excuses. I am very happy for Sathiyan.”

Sathiyan received Rs. 2.50 lakh besides a trophy while Sharath collected Rs. 1.65 lakh and the runner-up trophy.

The future is bright! How new rubber colours were decided...
Colourful racket coverings will arrive later this year. we finally have four new colours to choose from: pink, violet, green and blue.
Colours generally evoke many emotions in people. When this was analyzed reactions to the topic on social media over the past few months, the mood was mixed: one third were very happy, one third were totally against – and the rest simply didn’t mind.

At the ITTF Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 2019, more than 75% of the world’s delegates voted in favour of extending the colours of coverings.

The choice of colours had two limitations from the very beginning: the colour of the balls and the black covering, which was to remain unchanged. Accordingly, the aim was to define new colours and shades that were clearly distinguishable from ball colours and black surfaces.

Finding the answer to such questions, proceeded in several steps.

On a first large set of samples, which included all colours with graded shades, which were able to visually determine which samples were certainly out of question and which ones were to be tested.

For each critical colour shade, samples were then produced in three different nuances, which had to be tested in action at the table. It was tested Once with natural daylight in the background and once in a professional showroom without daylight. This was also approached the professionals for feedback last year at the T2 tournament in Singapore and the response was positive.

After this test the four new colours: pink, violet, green and blue, as well as the permitted colour spaces in which the brands are now allowed to develop new products. In the middle of November the Board of Directors approved from 1st October, 2021 the new colours will be on the market.

The impression that many players find it important to customise their material and coloured rubbers will offer another opportunity to do so in the future.

Now its the red and black rubber vs the colorful pink, violet, green and blue...
